The Four Immeasurables - the cultivation of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity - are the subject of this 10-week course held on Tuesday evenings from 7 - 9pm, starting 2nd May, 2023.
As well as developing an understanding of the Buddhist logic behind the cultivation of these immeasurable qualities, students will experience the rich set of meditation practices that open the heart, counter the distortions in our relationships to ourselves, and deepen our relationships with others.
In thirteenth century Tibet, the great Dzogchen Master named Longchenpa, taught that the conduct of a Bodhisattva can be summarised as having two aspects -
- aspirational bodhichitta, and
- actualizing bodhichitta
Longchenpa explained that aspirational bodhichitta is based on the Four Immeasurables -
- Immeasurable Love
- Immeasurable Compassion
- Immeasurable Joy
- Immeasurable Equanimity
Led by Western meditation instructors with many years of experience, each session consists of:
- Video teachings from Tibetan and Western Buddhist masters including Sogyal Rinpoche, Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche, Mingyur Rinpoche, Pema Chödrön and Sharon Salzberg.
- Meditation practice
- Time for contemplation
- Group discussions and Q&A, offering each student the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment and to connect with a community of practitioners.
Note - this 10 week course is also known as Module 2 of the Open Heart full year Foundation level course.
