8 classes on Wednesday evenings 7:00pm - 8:45pm AEST
From 20 August to 8 October
Plus two extended classes 10:00am - 4:00pm AEST on Sunday 7 September & 5 October
This 8-week course takes you to the heart of the Tibetan Buddhist wisdom tradition: the teachings of Dzogchen, or the Great Perfection. According to these teachings, all the well-being, warmth, clarity, and intelligence we could ever hope to attain, are already perfectly accomplished, within the nature of our own mind.
The reason why we don’t often experience this innate wakefulness is that we are so accustomed to looking for it outside ourselves. A great dzogchen master once summed this up as follows:
Samsara - the continuous sense of dissatisfaction we commonly experience - is mind turned outwardly, lost in its projections. Nirvana - the state of lasting peace and well-being - is mind turned inwardly, recognising its true nature.
In this course we will explore the deep implications for our way of living of this promising, yet challenging proposition, and the way to bring its profound truth into direct experience through the practice of meditation. Sogyal Rinpoche, in The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying , sums this up as:
The purpose of meditation is to awaken in us the sky-like nature of mind, and to introduce us to that which we really are, our unchanging pure awareness, which underlies the whole of life and death. In the stillness and silence of meditation, we glimpse and return to that deep inner nature that we have so long-ago lost sight of amid the busyness and distraction of our minds.
We are fragmented into so many different aspects. We don’t know who we really are, or what aspects of ourselves we should identify with or believe in. So many contradictory voices, dictates, and feelings fight for control over our inner lives that we find ourselves scattered everywhere, in all directions, leaving nobody at home.
Meditation, then, is bringing the mind home.
