Explore the Tibetan Buddhist understanding of death and dying. Tuesdays 10:30am - 12:30pm (optional discussion over lunch after class) starting 7 March 2023.

This course offers an introduction to the practical wisdom and sacred inspiration that can be drawn from the Tibetan Buddhist understanding of death and dying.

Based on the ground-breaking The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying and presenting video teachings by Sogyal Rinpoche, the course gives guidance on meditation and the practice of Essential Phowa, a practice for healing and for the moment of death. The course also addresses how we may best accompany someone nearing death and help a dying person to meet death reassured by loving support and care, with peace of mind and even with confidence.

Throughout the course you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding and your personal engagement with these topics through guided contemplations. There will be ample time for questions and discussion.

The course covers these key points:

  • understanding impermanence and death, and the heart advice for the moment of death

  • guidance on how to contemplate

  • an understanding of mind and how to work with it

  • calm abiding meditation

  • emotional and practical preparation for death

  • caring for a dying person

  • guidance on the practice of Essential Phowa

Who is this course for?

The course is suitable for anyone who wishes to learn more about death and dying from the Tibetan Buddhist perspective — whether you are new to meditation or Buddhism, an established student of Tibetan Buddhism, or come from another Buddhist tradition. The universality of the message of these teachings can bring benefit to anyone who wants to explore this topic.
