City Meditation Retreat Rigpa Newcastle Cultivating Shamatha Meditation to Reveal Insight Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, July 12-14 Starting Friday night at 7 pm - 8.30 pm Saturday/Sunday 9.30 am until 4 pm Finish

Our retreat provides an opportunity for full immersion into silence in order to cultivate shamatha meditation to reveal insight. Participants can then apply their mindfulness skills to close observation of their experience of their world and of themselves. This progression begins with breath meditation to break the incessant flow of the chattering mind, before moving into meditations based on open awareness - taking mind itself and awareness as the object of our meditation. This is because all Buddhist traditions emphasize that achieving shamatha is not an end in itself.

We will practice in approximately 20 minute sessions with breaks for mindful walking and brief yoga exercises. You can sit on chairs or on cushions on the floor.

This retreat is open to all and can cater for beginners and experienced students alike.

What do I need to bring?

Chairs and cushions will be available. Bring a jacket, sweater or shawl if you tend to feel the cold. No special attire is recommended – just be comfortable. Our centre is in the heart of the Hamilton cafe and restaurant district, a great place to source lunch. You are welcome to bring your own lunch and eat it at the Rigpa centre.

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided.
